Launch of Training Program for the 1st Energy Efficient Lighting CDM Project in Visakhapatnam

OSRAM and EPDCL plan to distribute over 600,000 long life CFL lamps in the district of Visakhapatanam under CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) methodology of UNFCCC.


Visakhapatnam: Wednesday, July 16, 2008:
The training program on distribution for the 1st Energy Efficient Lighting CDM project was inaugurated by Eastern Power Distribution Company of A.P.Limited (APEPDCL) and OSRAM on July 16th at Visakhapatnam. During the “Lighting of Lamps” ceremony, which took place at a prominent city hotel, Mr V. Suryanarayana Director Operation –APEPDCL emphasized the importance of this project: “This unique project developed by OSRAM will educate the consumers for energy efficient lighting and will bring huge power savings for the district of Visakhapatnam. We estimate a peak load reduction of more than 30MW when all CFL lamps are distributed. This will help EPDCL to effectively manage the load distribution. Each household will benefit in a reduced electricity bill, the whole project will also have a huge impact in CO2 reductions and therefore the environment. This program is for a better future for the state ,its people and for future generation” In this training program 120 core group members and 400 sub core team members will be trained over a period of 8 days , Mr Suryanaraya said. Mr B Ramesh Prasad –Chief General Manager (operation) EPDCL added that
“OSRAM and APEPDCL plans to distribute over 600,000 Long life CFL lamps which are manufactured in Germany and assembled in India. The lamps have an average life of 15000 hrs .This training program is an essential part of the distribution process and all distribution team members, consisting of self-help groups (SHG) should be well trained for effective distribution so that every house hold is benefitted. CFLs will emit more light than heat unlike the GLS bulbs” he said.
The inauguration of training program was attended by Smt Vijayalaksmi, President, Umbrella federation, Mr Govind Rao, DRDA,
Mr Shivaram Prasad, UCD, Mr Bhaskar Rao, TPMU attended the training program.
All the officers were extremely supportive of the project and confirmed that the SHG (Mahila Samakhya) are geared up for taking the distribution job after getting trained on distribution.

Mr Boris Bronger, Head of CDM Projects World from OSRAM Headquarter, Munich in his inaugural speech explained the delegates the benefit of this Project for EPDCL, all participating households in the district Visak and the positive impact this project will have on the environment when fully implemented. “With the CDM methodology developed by OSRAM, it will be possible to distribute long life CFLs to households which normally could not afford to purchase these lamps”. Mr Bronger also thanked BEE and RWE, Germany for joining this project and without their partnership this project would not have been possible.
Mr Chandan Bhattacharjee, Divisional Manager and CDM leader Osram India expressed his appreciation for EPDCL “APEPDCL is extremely progressive in its approach and have assigned a core team for this project. EPDCL team had played a very effective and important role by giving inputs during various stages of this project.
In his address to all present he thanked Mr Vijay Anand, JMD, AP Transco, Mr N. Gulzar, CMD, EPDCL, Dr Ajay Mathur , Director General , BEE, Mr Saurabh Kumar, Secretary , BEE for their supportive role in taking this project forward.
Mr Chandan Bhattacharjee also thanked Mr Devender Singh, Joint secretary, Ministry of Power, Government of India for his committed involvement in this CDM project.

Finally the training manual for distributuion was launched by Mr V. Suryanaraya, Director EPDCL and Mr Ramesh Prasad, CGM, APEPDCL
This was followed by Vote of Thanks by Mr KVV Satyanarayana, GM, Energy audit, APEPDCL.
